The district has been named after the inn known as the Swiss Tavern which had been built in 1804 depicting the style of Swiss Chalet. The inn was later renamed as the Swiss Cottage. This district is actually a formation out of the ancient parish of Hampstead.

The district came into existence after the authorized construction of he Finchley New Road and the Avenue road was over. The entire area was developed on a big scale in the year 1937-38 after the opening of the Odeon Cinema. After the World War II the local housing got constructed by the London County Council in the area.
